![]() The same proof of concept may be applicable to the transportation sector, wherein IOTA transaction could be used for buying travel tickets. Think, for example, of a vending machine, in which the transaction has associated a micropayment used for delivering a coffee or a snack. Of course, this use case can have several applications in the IoT field. The project presented in this article aims to demonstrate how an embedded, cheap, and widely used hardware platform, such as the Raspberry Pi, can connect to the IOTA network and generate valid transactions that can be successfully stored on the Tangle. Micropayments: The absence of mining and the ability to create transactions with very small amounts (aka micropayments), allows IOTA to efficiently manage M2M and IoT applications, where low latency and reduced (or even zero) transaction fees are mandatory requirements. The important thing is that these techniques work without causing any impact on the network performance and, in particular, on the transaction rate. Security: IOTA integrates sophisticated security mechanisms capable of detecting the presence of fraudulent users who seek to compromise the integrity of the Tangle by entering invalid transactions.Even an adequate embedded system can connect and send transaction to the IOTA network, opening the door to countless applications in the IoT field. In order to validate a transaction, high computing power is not needed, as is the case for Bitcoin and blockchain. Efficiency: In IOTA, there is no mining and, therefore, there are no crypto-miners.Scalability: With the growth of transactions stored in the cryptocurrency infrastructure (the so-called Tangle, a special form of directed acyclic graph), the overall system performance, expressed in terms of latency and transaction rate, improves.High transaction rate: The time required to confirm a transaction is very short and it decreases as the network grows. The advantages offered by the IOTA infrastructure, compared to the blockchain architecture used by Bitcoin and other similar cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, can be summarized as follows: In the diversified and crowded world of cryptocurrencies, IOTA has conquered a place of absolute importance, applying as the ideal cryptocurrency to support internet of things applications. This article shows how a common and cheap Raspberry Pi, despite having limited computational resources, is able to generate valid IOTA transactions. IOTA is a cryptocurrency whose characteristics are best-suited to support even the most challenging IoT applications.
